War Remnants Museum in Saigon


On August 31, 1858, the French colonialists attacked Da Nang, beginning the war of aggression, placing the colonial rule on Vietnam. In nearly 100 years, the Vietnamese people have bravely carried on the struggle for national liberation for independence and national independence. On September 2, 1945, after the victory of the August Revolution, President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence, ending the colonization of the French colonialists, affirming the independence and sovereignty of the Vietnamese people. But the French colonialists and then the American imperialists continued to carry out aggressive wars, plots to restore the yoke and establish a new colonial regime in Vietnam. For 30 years, the Vietnamese people have to fight hard against the sacrifices to protect their independence and freedom.
On April 30, 1975, the resistance war of the people of Vietnam won completely: peace, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country was restored.
To save the heroic evidence of the Vietnamese people in the struggle against the invading forces, and to denounce the crimes and highlight the dire consequences of the invasion war, 9/1975 The display of American crime - Wei is open to the public. Later, the US-Wei exhibition hall was renamed The War on Terror Exhibition (November 10, 1990) before becoming the War Remnants Museum (July 4, 1995).
The War Remnants Museum is a unit of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports. Located as a part of the system of Vietnamese museums, including museums for world peace and a member of the World Museum Council (ICOM), the War Remnants Museum is a research museum, collecting, preserving and displaying material, images and exhibits as the evidence of crimes and the consequences of the wars that the aggressors have caused to Vietnam. Thereby, the Museum is of public education, especially the young generation, in the spirit of defending the independence and freedom of the homeland, the sense of anti-war invasion, protection of peace and solidarity and the friendship between the peoples of the world.
The Museum holds more than 20,000 documents, artifacts, and films, of which more than 1,500 documents, artifacts and films have been introduced in eight permanent exhibitions. During 35 years of operation, the Museum has welcomed more than 15 million visitors at home and abroad. Currently, with about 500,000 visitors each year, the War Remnants Museum is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the country and abroad.
In terms of achievements, the War Remnants Museum has been awarded the third rank Labor Medal (in 1995), the Labor Medal 2nd class (in 2001).

Since 2002, the War Remnants Museum has been newly built to modernize its operations. On 30/4/2010, the construction was completed. The place is currently finding new exhibits, extending into both the French-Japanese invasion and the post-war period.
